What is a ball sack?
"Ball sack" is a vulgar or informal term for the scrotum — the pouch of skin and muscle that hangs below the penis in human males (and male mammals). Briefly:
- Function: The scrotum holds and protects the testicles (testes), which produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. It helps regulate temperature for optimal sperm production by contracting (bringing testes closer to the body when cold) or relaxing (allowing them to hang lower when warm).
- Structure: It contains the two testicles, the epididymides (where sperm mature), parts of the spermatic cords (vessels and vas deferens), nerves and blood vessels. The skin is typically thinner than other areas and may be wrinkled.
- Health: Common issues include infections (epididymitis, orchitis), varicocele (enlarged veins), hernias, testicular torsion (a medical emergency), and lumps that may need evaluation for cancer. Any sudden severe pain, swelling, or a new lump should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
