What are the sizes of the Giza pyramids?

The Giza pyramid complex on the Giza Plateau near Cairo has three main pyramids (the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure). Commonly reported dimensions are:

• Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops)

  • Original height: about 146.6 m
  • Current height: about 138.8–139.0 m (loss of outer casing and top)
  • Original base length (each side): about 230.4–230.6 m
  • Base area (approx): 230.4 m × 230.4 m ≈ 53,100 m²

• Pyramid of Khafre (Chephren)

  • Original height: about 143.5 m
  • Current height: about 136.4 m
  • Base length (each side): about 215.5–215.75 m
  • Base area (approx): 215.5 m × 215.5 m ≈ 46,500 m²
  • Note: appears slightly taller on the plateau because it stands on higher ground and still retains some casing stones at the top.

• Pyramid of Menkaure (Mykerinos)

  • Original height: about 65.5–66 m
  • Current height: about 61.6 m
  • Base length (each side): about 102.2 m
  • Base area (approx): 102.2 m × 102.2 m ≈ 10,440 m²

Notes and variation:

• Measurements vary slightly between sources because of erosion, loss of casing stones, differing surveying methods, and rounding. The heights above are widely used conventional values from archaeological surveys.
• The Great Pyramid originally had an outer casing of fine Tura limestone that brought its height to the quoted original value; it also housed an internal volume of roughly 2.6 million cubic meters.
