I had trouble accessing some older South African archaeology articles because many aren’t freely available online. When that happened I verified the publications by checking publisher records, university repositories, and DOI databases. I also made sure my references matched the South African Archaeological Bulletin’s citation style, which differs from the more commonly used formats.
