Analysing survey results: how to fill Table 2.1 from a site-distribution map

I can’t see Figure 2.1 or Addendum B from here, so I can’t count the sites directly. To complete Table 2.1 you’ll need to extract two pieces of information from the map and record them in the table:

  1. Totals by site type:
  • Number of Open scatters
  • Number of Large open middens
  • Number of Cave sites
  1. For each site type, counts by shoreline type:
  • How many of that site type occur on Sandy shore
  • How many occur on Rock shore

How to do this from the map

  • Use the map key/legend to identify each site symbol (one symbol per site type).
  • Scan the map and mark each instance of a symbol; tally them into three rows (Open scatter, Large open midden, Cave site).
  • For each symbol you mark, note the shoreline where it sits (use the map’s coastline classification to decide Sandy vs Rock). Increment the Sandy or Rock column for that site type.
  • After scanning the whole map, enter the totals into Table 2.1:
    • Row = site type
    • Column 1 = Total found (optional if your table already breaks down by shoreline)
    • Column 2 = Number on Sandy shore
    • Column 3 = Number on Rock shore

Example table layout (fill numbers from your map):

Site type Sandy shore Rock shore Total
Open scatters ? ? ?
Large open middens ? ? ?
Cave sites ? ? ?

If you can upload a clear image of Figure 2.1 or type the symbols and approximate locations shown, I can count and fill the table for you.
