Did you know that octopuses have three hearts and blue blood? Two of the hearts pump blood to the gills, where it picks up oxygen, while the third heart pumps it to the rest of the body. Their blue blood is due to a copper-rich protein called hemocyanin, which is more efficient at transporting oxygen in cold and low-oxygen environments than the iron-based hemoglobin in vertebrates. Pretty fascinating, right?
