Zach had always been curious about the strange trinkets and devices lining Nick's room, which was more of a mini-laboratory than a typical teenage hangout. One afternoon, while Nick was fiddling with a peculiar green gadget that looked like a blender crossed with a sparkler, Zach’s curiosity got the better of him. “Hey, what’s that thing?” he asked, leaning in closer. “Careful, man! That’s an experimental shrinking ray prototype,” Nick replied, half-joking. “I haven’t even tested it yet!” Zach scoffed, but he couldn’t shake off the temptation to give it a try. Without waiting for Nick’s cautious reply, he reached out and turned a dial. The gadget whirred to life, emitting a blinding flash of light before everything went dark. When Zach came to, he was no longer standing in Nick’s room. Instead, he was surrounded by enormous furniture, towering books, and a perception of the world that felt utterly foreign. He looked down, panic rising in his chest as he saw tiny feet before him—his own. He had shrunk to a mere one inch tall. “Oh no, no, no!” he muttered, his voice now an almost squeaky whisper. He couldn't comprehend the complexity of his new situation—how to reverse it or even where to hide. Just then, the door opened. Zach’s heart sank as he saw his sister, Mercy, walk into the room. At 22, she was already a towering figure in his life, but now she felt like a giantess. Her casual stride shook the ground beneath him, and he could barely comprehend the sight of her sneakers approaching. Out of instinct he tried to back away, but there was nowhere to go. Mercy spotted him—or rather, the tiny plastic toy he now resembled on the floor. She knelt down, eyes wide with curiosity. “Oooh, what’s this?” she said, her voice booming. “A little toy?” Zach waved frantically, but it was pointless. Mercy reached down and gently pinched him between her fingers, lifting him effortlessly off the ground. He was swung around like a plaything, the world spinning dizzyingly as he was brought closer to her face. “Wow, you’re so cute!” she exclaimed, her smile blinding him. “I’ve never seen a toy like this before!” “Mercy! It’s me, Zach! Put me down!” he squealed, but his voice was now barely audible above her laughter. She cradled him in her palm, oblivious to his panic, and stood up. “I think I’ll take you to my room,” she said, revealing a decision already made. “You can be my new desk buddy!” Zach watched in horror as she strolled down the hallway, each step resonating in his tiny form. As she entered her bedroom, he was awash in a mix of fear and disbelief. This was his sister, and her playful nature could turn into something far more terrifying at this size. Mercy placed him on her desk among her collection of knickknacks, casual as ever. She sat down and began chatting about her day, completely unaware of the reality of Zach’s predicament. He tried to make his voice heard, struggling to climb atop a stack of notebooks, but his cries went unheard. “I’ll make sure you’re the best toy ever!” she chirped, picking up a bright red marker and scribbling on a piece of paper. “What should I name you?” “Mercy! Just listen!” he yelled, but it came out as nothing more than a frantic series of squeaks. “Hmm... how about Tiny Zach?” she giggled, clearly delighting in her new toy. He was desperate, utterly frantic now, hoping somehow she'd see the dazed look on his face and understand. But as she continued to chatter happily, he realized that he had to find a way to get her attention, or at least find a means to reverse whatever Nick's gadget had done. As the evening wore on, Zach began plotting. He knew he could work with what he had; although small, he was still creative and resourceful. Maybe he could use her own playful nature against her. With determination igniting a spark of hope, he started looking for ways to signal to Mercy or even find a way back to Nick’s gadget. After all, he was still Zach underneath the plastic shell, and he wouldn’t remain a toy forever.
