What is methamphetamine?

Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive central nervous system stimulant. It is a synthetic drug that is chemically similar to amphetamine, a substance used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Methamphetamine has a high potential for abuse and can lead to significant physical and psychological dependence. Methamphetamine can take several forms, including powder and crystalline (commonly known as crystal meth). It is typically ingested by smoking, snorting, injecting, or orally ingesting, each method affecting the body differently and altering the intensity and duration of the drug's effects. The drug stimulates the release of dopamine in the brain, leading to intense feelings of pleasure and increased energy. However, prolonged use can have severe health consequences, including: - Cardiovascular problems, such as increased heart rate and risk of heart attacks - Severe dental issues often called "meth mouth" - Weight loss and malnutrition - Skin issues such as sores and infections - Psychiatric problems, including anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations Long-term use can result in lasting cognitive deficits and damaged brain structures associated with emotion and memory. Treatment options for methamphetamine addiction may include behavioral therapies and support groups, but recovery can be challenging due to the drug's potent effects on the brain and behavior.
