What is a cult?

A cult is typically defined as a social group that is characterized by beliefs or practices that are considered outside of mainstream society. The term can carry a negative connotation and is often used to describe groups that manipulate or exploit their members, particularly in terms of psychological control, isolation, and coercion. Cults often have a charismatic leader who exerts significant influence over the group and may promote doctrines that deviate from conventional beliefs. They can exploit their members emotionally, financially, or socially and may engage in high-pressure recruitment tactics or demand strict loyalty and obedience. Notably, the term "cult" can be subjective and is sometimes used pejoratively, making it important to approach its application with care. Academic and sociological studies may prefer terms like "new religious movement" to describe these groups without the stigma attached to "cult."
