What causes Acid Rain?

Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. The burning of fossil fuels by power plants, vehicles, and other sources releases these gases. When released in large enough amounts, these gases can travel hundreds of miles in the atmosphere and can cause acid rain far away from their original source.
