Literature Review: The UK food industry has been facing various challenges in recent years, particularly in terms of sustainability and circular economy. As the demand for food continues to grow, there is a need for the food industry to adopt more efficient and sustainable manufacturing strategies to meet the increasing demand while minimizing its environmental impact. In this context, smart manufacturing has emerged as a potential solution for the UK food industry to achieve sustainable development and contribute to the circular economy. Smart manufacturing, also known as Industry 4.0, is a digitalized and interconnected approach to manufacturing that integrates advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics to optimize production processes and improve resource efficiency. Several studies have highlighted the potential of smart manufacturing in the food industry, particularly in terms of reducing food waste, improving traceability and quality, and increasing energy efficiency (Sethuraj and Rezvani, 2019; van der Vorst et al., 2019). Moreover, with the growing global concern for sustainability and circular economy, there has been a shift towards more sustainable practices in the food industry. The circular economy aims to minimize waste and promote the optimal use of resources, which aligns with the principles of smart manufacturing. Some studies have explored the potential of circular economy practices in the food industry, such as implementing closed-loop systems, reducing food waste, and promoting recycling and reuse (Winans et al., 2017; Geng et al., 2019). Research Gap: Despite the potential benefits of smart manufacturing and circular economy practices in the UK food industry, there is a lack of research on the integration of these two strategies and their role in sustainable development. Most studies focus on the individual impacts of smart manufacturing or circular economy in the food industry, rather than exploring their combined effects. Furthermore, while there is a growing body of literature on smart manufacturing and circular economy in the food industry, most studies are based on theoretical frameworks and lack empirical evidence. There is a need for more empirical research to examine the implementation and effectiveness of smart manufacturing and circular economy practices in the UK food industry. Additionally, there is a lack of research on the challenges and barriers that hinder the adoption of smart manufacturing and circular economy practices in the UK food industry. Some studies have highlighted the cost and complexity of implementing smart manufacturing technologies, as well as the trade-offs between economic and environmental objectives (Caro et al., 2019; Garcia et al., 2019). Similarly, barriers to implementing circular economy practices in the food industry include lack of support from stakeholders, regulatory challenges, and limited resources (Geng et al., 2019). Further research is needed to understand these challenges and identify strategies to overcome them. In conclusion, although there is a growing body of literature on smart manufacturing and circular economy in the UK food industry, there is a need for more empirical research to examine the integration of these two strategies and their role in driving sustainable development. Moreover, understanding the challenges and barriers to implementing these practices is crucial to promote their adoption in the food industry and achieve a more sustainable and circular system.
