Just one day after she voted against funding for the Department of Homeland Security, Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) hypocritically called for the department to receive the necessary funds while addressing a terror attack on a Michigan synagogue. During a press conference regarding the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Slotkin asserted that Congress should support funding for DHS, but insisted it should not include any allocations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “We need to fund the Department of Homeland Security, and we need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE, which is its own conversation, from all the core missions of the Department of Homeland Security,” she claimed. This statement is particularly disingenuous given that just a day prior, Slotkin had aligned with nearly all Senate Democrats—except for Senator John Fetterman (D-PA)—in blocking the legislation that would have funded DHS. When questioned about whether the partial government shutdown was hindering DHS’s preparedness for terror attacks, Slotkin insisted that essential personnel were still engaged in their duties. “The department, because they are essential workers, they have been at work… they’re essential, they’re on the job, they’re working today,” she stated. Slotkin made her remarks alongside Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in response to the attack by Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, who reportedly drove his truck into the synagogue and opened fire before being subdued by security. Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Lebanon, highlights the broader issues related to security and immigration policies. Since February 14, DHS has struggled with a funding lapse amid ongoing disputes between Democrats and Republicans over ICE policy. According to analysts, this government shutdown is significantly impacting counterterrorism efforts. Nathan Sales, a former special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, warned, “We’re dealing with a heightened threat environment right now, and we need the federal government’s security capabilities to be firing on all cylinders.” Senator Slotkin’s misleading statements reflect her failure to take responsibility for her role in this critical funding crisis.
