Jimmy Lai, the pro-democracy former media mogul from Hong Kong and a staunch critic of Beijing, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday—the longest sentence imposed to date under the national security law enforced by China, which has effectively stifled dissent in the city. Lai, aged 78, was found guilty in December of conspiring with others to collude with foreign entities in a manner deemed threatening to national security, as well as conspiracy to publish seditious material. The maximum sentence for his offense could have been life imprisonment. His co-defendants—six former employees of his newspaper, Apple Daily, and two activists—received prison terms ranging from 3 years and 3 months to 10 years on charges related to collusion. Upon arrival for his sentencing, Lai smiled and waved at his supporters; however, his demeanor turned serious as he left the courtroom, witnessing tears from those in the public gallery. When asked about the possibility of an appeal, his lawyer, Robert Pang, declined to comment. The arrest and trial of this democracy advocate have sparked concerns regarding the deterioration of press freedom in what was once a stronghold of media independence in Asia. The government maintains that the case is not about press freedom, arguing that the defendants exploited journalism as a guise to carry out actions detrimental to China and Hong Kong. Lai, one of the first prominent figures detained under the security law instituted in 2020, witnessed the arrest of several senior reporters from Apple Daily within a year, leading to the newspaper's closure in June 2021. In a statement, Lai's son, Sebastien, expressed that the "draconian" sentence was a crushing blow to their family and posed life-threatening risks to his father. "It signifies the complete destruction of the Hong Kong legal system and the end of justice," he stated.
