The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 British-American epic war film set in Japanese-occupied British colonial Burma during World War II. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Pierre Boulle. The movie was directed by David Lean and stars William Holden, Jack Hawkins, Alec Guinness, and Sessue Hayakawa. The film won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture. The story tells of the construction of a railway bridge over the River Kwai by Allied prisoners of war, and their determination to create a masterpiece in spite of the brutality of their captors.
