Synder vs pantaleo answer the Who , where , what, when , why and how? Essay
Who: Officer Daniel Pantaleo and Eric Garner
Where: Staten Island, New York City
What: Eric Garner’s death
When: July 17, 2014
Why: Officer Pantaleo, while attempting to arrest Garner for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes, put him in a chokehold, which caused Garner to lose consciousness and eventually led to his death.
How: Garner had resisted arrest and assumed a combative stance. Pantaleo used a chokehold, a move that was banned by the New York City Police Department in 1993 yet still used by police officers. Garner suffered from asthma, making the chokehold even more dangerous, and officers claim he again fell limp and unresponsive after they removed the chokehold. Garner was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The July 17 incident sparked public outcry and prompted an investigation that lasted exactly one year before the Staten Island Grand Jury declined to file charges against Daniel Pantaleo in December of 2014. In July of 2019, it was reported that the United States Department of Justice would not pursue a federal civil rights case against Pantaleo, sparking further fury and public outcry.
