synder vs pantaleo

Synder vs Pantaleo is a lawsuit stemming from the July 2014 death of Eric Garner in New York City. Garner, an unarmed Black man, died after a white police officer, Daniel Pantaleo, placed him in a chokehold while trying to arrest him for selling illegal loose cigarettes. The case was heard by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and resulted in a decision to award Garner's family $5.9 million in damages. The judge also recommended that Pantaleo be fired from the NYPD. The ruling was ultimately reviewed and overruled by the NYPD itself, after a lengthy internal review.
