Restructuring- one of Gorbachev’s major reform


policies that involved restructuring the Soviet economic, political, and social systems to make them more efficient and responsive to the needs of the people. Perestroika- a term coined by Gorbachev that refers to the restructuring of the Soviet economy and society, which aimed to increase productivity, decentralize decision-making, and encourage private enterprise. Demokratizatsiya- meaning "democratization," demokratizatsiya was a policy promoted by Gorbachev that aimed to increase political openness and participation in the Soviet Union, including more competitive elections and freedom of speech and press. Glasnost- a term meaning "openness," glasnost was a key aspect of Gorbachev's reform policies that encouraged greater freedom of expression and information, including allowing more criticism of the government and the release of previously censored material. New Political Thinking- a term used by Gorbachev to describe his approach to international relations, which emphasized cooperation and mutual understanding between the Soviet Union and the West, rather than confrontation and competition. Human Rights- a concept that became more central to Gorbachev's policies, as he sought to improve conditions for the Soviet people and promote greater respect for human rights domestically and internationally. Détente- a period of improved relations and reduced tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States that occurred during Gorbachev's time in office, as a result of his policies of Glasnost and New Political Thinking.
