Globally, the prevalence of hunger is alarmingly high, significantly impacting the livelihoods and development of families (Drysdale et al., 2021). While South Africa is regarded as food secure at the national level, food insecurity remains a significant issue at the household level (Food and Agriculture Organisation, 2023). According to Statistics South Africa (2021), the number of food-insecure households decreased from 13.5 million to 6.8 million. Food security is defined as individuals having physical and economic access to safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and preferences, enabling an active and healthy life (FAO, 1996). Verma (2020) identified population growth and increases in household size as primary factors contributing to food insecurity in households.
