In Ghana, recent curriculum reforms in history aim to enhance students' understanding of the nation's challenges and cultural diversity. However, there are ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of history education in fostering a cohesive national identity. At Wa Senior High School, students often display limited awareness of important national events and figures, with ethnic identities overshadowing a unified national consciousness. The impact of the history curriculum on shaping students' perceptions of national identity remains uncertain. Ajayi (1968) argues that history instruction must reflect shared national narratives to cultivate a strong sense of identity, while Osabu-Kle (2000) emphasizes the need for roots in local histories for genuine patriotism. Moreover, the presentation of historical content in classrooms can either unite or divide. This study intends to investigate how Wa Senior High School’s history curriculum influences students' views on national identity, patriotism, and civic responsibility, which is crucial for enhancing national unity and effective nation-building.
