I'm not a lawyer, but I can offer some general information.
In many jurisdictions, property owners have a certain level of responsibility for their pets, especially if the animals cause harm to someone on their property. If the child was trespassing or on your property without permission, that may affect liability. However, laws regarding dog bites and liability can vary widely based on local laws.
Here are some key points to consider:
1. **Trespassing**: If the kid was trespassing, you may have a stronger argument against liability. However, this doesn't necessarily absolve you of responsibility for your dogs' behavior.
2. **Leash Laws**: Some areas have laws requiring dogs to be on leashes or contained within your property. If the dogs were not contained properly at the time of the incident, it might affect liability.
3. **Dog Bite Laws**: Many states have "one bite rules," which means the owner of a dog isn’t liable for a first bite if the dog was not known to be dangerous; however, this can vary.
4. **Communication**: It may be helpful to communicate with the child's parents about the situation. You could express your concerns and discuss how to prevent incidents in the future.
5. **Preventing Future Incidents**: Consider measures to keep your dogs secure and to discourage unwanted visitors, such as a fence or a sign.
If you are concerned about potential legal repercussions, it might be wise to consult a lawyer who specializes in animal law or personal injury to get advice specific to your situation. They can provide guidance based on your local laws.
