“ GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, cannot be directly converted into γ-butyrolactone. However, it is possible to synthesize γ-butyrolactone from GABA by following the steps outlined below: Step 1: Protect the amino group of GABA The first step is to protect the amino group of GABA to prevent unwanted reactions. This can be achieved by reacting GABA with a reagent such as acetyl chloride in the presence of a base, such as sodium bicarbonate. This will result in the formation of N-acetyl-GABA. Step 2: Convert N-acetyl-GABA to N-acyl-GABA ester Next, the N-acetyl group of N-acetyl-GABA needs to be converted to an N-acyl group. This can be done by treating N-acetyl-GABA with an N-acylating agent, such as acyl chloride or anhydride, in the presence of a base. This reaction will result in the formation of N-acyl-GABA ester. Step 3: Convert N-acyl-GABA ester to γ-butyrolactam The N-acyl-GABA ester can then be converted to γ-butyrolactam by refluxing it in a mixture of hydrochloric acid and acetic anhydride. This reaction will result in the formation of an intermediate, which will then be converted to γ-butyrolactam upon heating. Step 4: Convert γ-butyrolactam to γ-butyrolactone Finally, the γ-butyrolactam can be converted to γ-butyrolactone by reacting it with an acid, such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, under high temperature and pressure. This reaction will result in the formation of γ-butyrolactone, which can be isolated and purified through various methods.
