Herbert Wells promoted teaching Russian as a third foreign language in British schools.

He believed it was a beneficial and practical language to learn and would broaden students' horizons and understanding of the wider world. He was particularly keen to engage the younger generation, as he argued that the ability to communicate with people in another language was becoming an increasingly important in an internationalized world. He also felt it could help students to increase their employment prospects in the future.
