Fossil fuels are a type of energy resource that has been formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient plants and animals, and they represent the majority of the Earth’s energy sources. In the modern age, virtually every process of economic development has some dependence on fossil fuels. They are primarily sources of energy, but they are also used to create valuable materials such as plastics, as well as industrial chemicals, medicines, and many other products. Fossil fuels are used to produce electricity, provide heating, power industry, and produce transportation fuels (petroleum and natural gas). In so doing, these fuels are integral to the functioning of many businesses, services and industries. Fossil fuels help to drive economic development, as without access to a reliable energy source, it is not possible to develop an economy. The reliance on fossil fuels by many countries has accelerated economic growth and improved the quality of life in many communities. Fossil fuels provide energy that is inexpensive and relatively efficient, which makes them attractive to both developed and developing countries. However, although fossil fuels have been a major part in driving economic growth, their environmental and social impacts often outweigh the benefits to both local and global communities. Economic growth and development have been accompanied often by a major increase in carbon dioxide emissions, resulting in environmental damage and climate change – which in turn threatens economic development. Other issues include air pollution, destruction of ecosystems, water/land contamination, and public health threats. Despite this, fossil fuels will remain a dominant source of energy for the foreseeable future.
